While many empires and continents lay beyond its reach, the first-century world was undeniably shaped by Rome, centered around the Mediterranean. Despite its expansive influence, the Empire's borders were limited. Ireland and the Highlands of Scotland remained outside, with the Rhine and Danube forming its northern frontier. The Armenian highlands marked its northeast limits, while the Middle Eastern sands defined its southern edge. Egypt, fiercely defended, was merely a narrow strip along the Nile. To the west, natural defenses confined Roman Africa to the coast. This dominion was relatively recent; just over a century before Paul's arrival in Rome, Julius Caesar's campaigns expanded the Empire to include present-day France and Belgium. Meanwhile, Pompey's eastern conquests integrated Asia Minor, Syria, and Palestine into the Roman fold.
